Should I upgrade to Windows 10?

Windows 10

Windows 10

Yes !

There are some nice new features in the upgrade.  The desktop experience is more refined, and the search bar is really useful again.  The menus are improved.  You can print to PDF (but not the searchable version).  Windows 10 works really well with tablet/laptop hybrids.

But Wait!

The final version of Windows 10 was just recently released.  Over the next month or two, vendors will be doing last minute updates to drivers and applications.  Microsoft and various bloggers are still documenting minor issues and workarounds.  If you wait a few months, and do have a problem, then it will be lots easier to fix.

Don’t get me wrong – I expect that most migrations will go smoothly.  Windows 10 is well tested, and not really that different architecturally from Windows 7 or 8.  Laptops are more likely to have issues than desktops.

If you feel the need, do one final backup (I know you do regular backups) and do the migration.  Do realize that if you choose to be a pioneer you might catch an arrow or two!

When….?

If you decide to wait, there’s no need to hurry.  You have until July 2016 to upgrade from Windows 7/8 (Vista users are due for new hardware anyway and do not get the free upgrade).   If the popup to install Windows 10 proves annoying, contact us and we will turn it off for you.

What about business machines?  These will not be offered automatic upgrades. We will help you upgrade at the ‘right’ time.   This usually means when your important business applications have all been certified and are supported.

For your home PC, I suspect October or November 2015 will be about the right time.  When it’s time, upgrade your home PC or ask us to help out if you prefer.   Then enjoy the new Windows 10!

The ‘Threshhold 2’ update is expected in November.
