The Death Platter

Death Platter

by Steve Deal on April 5, 2012

We’re able to fix a lot of things just by changing a few settings or reinstalling some software.  But sometimes…. it’s just a hardware problem.    If the computer doesn’t boot (load) at all, we can physically pull the hard drive.    A hard drive is the ‘filing cabinet’ that holds your documents, music and pictures.

We put it on the ‘Death Platter’ – a special cooling pad attached to a lab PC.  From there, we can run utilities to try to repair the drive, and pull copies of your files to move to another computer.

It doesn’t always work – regular backups are the only guarantee that you will always have your stuff!
